26 Confirmed Cases of Bullying at Kinnelon Schools

There were a total of 96 reported incidents of possible harassment, intimidation and bullying.

The harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) numbers are in for Kinnelon’s schools.

According to a semi-annual HIB report by Interim Superintendent of Schools Diane DiGiuseppe, the district is still identifying what incidents qualify under one of the three categories when dealing with the issue.

DiGiuseppe’s report found there to be a total of 26 confirmed cases of harassment, intimidation and bullying district-wide, including five apiece confirmed at Kiel and Pearl R. Miller schools, 12 at Stonybrook and five at Kinnelon High School. However, that total was whittled down from 96 total reported incidents that were investigated as possible HIB cases.

“There may have been more initiated investigations because we were still figuring out what the new law means,” DiGiuseppe said. “Our role over the next year is to identify what’s a natural conflict and what falls under the new HIB regulations.”

DiGiuseppe confirmed that action was taken in all 26 cases of confirmed HIB to discipline and mediate between the students involved.

“Students were provided with consequences or mediation, and there were assistive strategies for students who were being targeted,” DiGiuseppe said.
