Council Continues Exploring Bike Route Safety

Councilman suggests adding warning signs to bike route signs.

Whether or not more signs should be added or signs could be taken away from the bike route on three major thoroughfares is still being explored by the Kinnelon Council in the wake of public concern over the safety for both bicyclists and motorists on the designated route.

The "bike route" signs that line Boonton Avenue, Fayson Lakes Road and Kinnelon Road have become a hot issue in Kinnelon, particularly on Fayson Lakes Road after after colliding with a car. The and not the driver of the vehicle, but residents have become concerned about

Mayor Bob Collins said last month he was as they were included as part of a Morris County grant. Councilman Gary Moleta reported at the May 10 meeting that the state is considering updating listed bike routes, but that Fayson Lakes Road is already not listed in the state's promotional materials of the bike routes in New Jersey.

Moleta said he has met with several local bike clubs to begin conversations about what would promote safety along the routes for bicyclists.

"We're gonna look at the area and see what would be good for a bicyclist to see in advance," he said.

Moleta said he has done some research and thinks that the reason Fayson Lakes Road, and many other bike routes, have not been deemed "dangerous" is because county and state officials may not know about them intimately. Collins did not think the county would be interested in reducing the bike routes in Kinnelon.

"They really went to great lengths to encourage bike paths," he said.

Councilman Stephen Cobell said that if the borough must maintain its bike routes, perhaps additional signage that warns bicyclists and motorists that a particularly dangerous section is approaching and to use caution would be appropriate.

"I really think we have to consider adding signs to those polls," he said "Apparently, they don't strongly enough serve as a warning."

The area on Fayson Lakes Road where the most recent accident occurred is a sharp turn that creates difficulty for drivers and motorists to see what is coming from the other side.
