Council to Declare Emergency Cleanup of Animal Shelter

Bloomingdale Council to meet Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Bloomingdale Council is expected to declare an emergency cleanup of the Bloomingdale Animal Shelter during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

At the last council meeting on Sept. 13, Bloomingdale Regional Animal Shelter Society (BASS) President Ellen Ribitzki told the council that the health department had advised her that employees and animals should not be in the quarantine building due to mold resulting from flooding after Hurricane Irene. Borough Administrator Ted Ehrenburg confirmed the mold issue and said the animals were temporarily re-located at the Department of Public Works (DPW) building.

During a special meeting last Tuesday, the council agreed to pay BASS $2,500 so that BASS could continue operating the shelter for the next month. The council is working to award a contract for animal shelter services through competitive contracting.

When asked when she expects the council to make a decision, Council President Linda Huntley said "Hopefully at the end of this month."

The council is also expected to discuss the status of the competitive contracting for animal shelter services and general maintenance of the animal shelter at Tuesday's meeting.

Also on the agenda, the council will discuss interlocal agreements with Pompton Lakes and vote on authorizing bids to purchase a new garbage truck.

The council will be discussing whether to declare a state of emergency resulting from Hurricane Irene and establish a date to thank borough employees for their work during and after the storm.

During the meeting, the council will accept the resignation of Building Inspector William Fleck and will discuss appointing Michael Taback to fill his unexpired term. The council will also thank Tax Assessor Barbara McNamara for her years of service with the borough.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at Borough Hall, 101 Hamburg Turnpike. To see the full council agenda, click here.

It truly is about time that this council does something positive for one the best assets that Bloomingdale has by making money available for BASS to help clean up after the hurricane. I also believe that the boro owes this group back monies for all the care they have given to animals brought in from not only our town but many others as well. I and many other boro residents who have any clue just how great this organization is and has been, would love to see the town come to an agreement with BASS to continue services; and allow them to also do the rescue work - thru it's many fundraisers and donations. However, it seems that the only way this will be possible is for Bloomingdale to pay up to date so the group can recoup the money it has had to use (that was raised by BASS - not paid by the town) so that they can operate in the black.

The reason the council is doing something for BASS is because the Republican majority has decided that six years of no contract and arguing with the Democrat council was enough. I do agree that they are a hard working, compassoniate group who need our support and financial aid. We are also sanitizing and cleaning the facility.
