DWI Checkpoints to Begin Monday

Morris County police departments to patrol 'heavily traveled roadways.'

Police departments throughout Morris County will be participating in a series of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) checkpoints and patrols from Dec. 12 through Dec. 18 in conjunction with the Morris County Police Chief's Association.

"These details will be held on heavily traveled roadways all throughout Morris County, where arrests and crashes involving intoxicated drivers are numerous," said Chief Christopher Wagner, president of the assocation. "It will involve the utilization of over 50 police officers."

"It is the hope of the Morris County Police Chief’s Association that all motorists heed the advice not to drink and drive, especially during the holiday season," he added in a press release.

The majority of funding for the checkpoint details will be paid for by the New Jersey Highway Traffic Safety Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over grant.

Without probably cause, this checkpoints are, in my opinion, unconstitutional and are just another example of how we, the people, are allowing our freedoms to be taken away and move to a police state. I wonder how our founder fathers, like John Hancock, would think of the government (british or otherwise) stopping citizens while performing no apparent illegal act, just to see if they are in fact perfomring an illegal act.

Of course random checkpoints are unconstitutional.

Most people think that the 4th amendment only applies to one's home, but it actually says; "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Note "persons", "papers" and "effects".

I agree totally, why will 100 cars be interrupted in travel, to MAYBE, find one or two who, are not otherwise creating havoc? Why don't we do random burglar checks? random rape checks ? Why not storm our homes, you MIGHT find some ''out of code'' wiring or plumbing ! What a great preventative idea no ? How about random liquidity checks on banks and investment firms ? THAT might fly. I would like to see the ACLU take up this banner, ergo; " what other area of jurisprudence exists, where you are assumed GUILTY before proven INNOCENT ???

no, that is not worse, seat belt and stickers do not take 6 to 12 months of ''priveleges'' away and cost 10 grand in fines, and insurance fees.

worse because cops can SEE seat belt and sticker violations, but DWI checks target EYERYONE, Innocent or guilty all presumed to be violators.

All of you liberals, if only, God forbid, a family member of yours was killed by a drunk driver your first response would be why didn't the cops do more. You are all probably the drunks we are trying to apprehend in an effort to save a life.

Liberals? Really??? I thought the conservatives prided themselves in being the ones who believed in individual rights, a limited government, and protection of the constitution. Funny how some on the right will always cry "liberals" whenever an opinion differs from their own... as if that explains everything.

Beezer must be an officer of ''the law'' or wanna be(eezer) I don't advocate impaired ''anything'' but I sure AS HELL do not, never did never will, agree that UN-CONSTITUTIONAL (no one has challenged it yet) roadside checkpoints are WORTH THE GRIEF and aggravation to the general public ! Like I stated earlier, I REPEAT ! WHAT other area of ''jurisprudence'' are you GUILTY before proven INNOCENT ?? It's the same ''feel good'' warm fuzzy laws like the ones we invent for EVERY infraction ! Billy's law, Sandy's law, Suzie's law Rebecca's law- here's the one we need - ROGER'S LAW i:e: NO MORE DAMNED LAWS. How about ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT LAWS ? We ignore those, but oh my god, if you have a BEER with DINNER, strip search ! It's nothing but a revenue generator to justify over-size, over-bearing police departments. Cops do many good things but DWI check points will NEVER make the relationship with John Q Public ''user friendly''
