Fallen Kinnelon Soldier to Be Honored in Smoke Rise
Jonathan Batista to be remembered by annual fishing tournament.
The Smoke Rise Fishing Club will be honoring fallen Kinnelon soldier Spc. Jonathan Batista with a new family event, the Jonathan Batista Memorial Bass Tournament and Dinner, according to NJ.com.
The event will be held on Sept. 15 and will be open to Smoke Rise residents and their guests.
Batista was killed in Afghanistan by small arms fire in July while serving his first deployment. He was 22 years old.
Batista was assigned to the 2nd Batallian, 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., according to the Department of Defense. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and several other honors.
The Kinnelon community welcomed him home by lining Kinnelon Road with American flags while his body was brought to Our Lady of the Magnificat Church for funeral services.
