Four Charged With Criminal Mischief After Mailboxes Damaged by Bat
Police said marijuana was also found.
Four individuals were charged with criminal mischief on April 10 after Kinnelon police said they allegedly damaged mailboxes with a baseball bat on Cutlass Road and Fayson Lakes Road.
Police said they responded to Cutlass Road at 5:33 pm. where it was reported that a black Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was seen with the occupants allegedly damaging the mailboxes. Police said they found an SUV that matched the vehicle’s description on Boonton Avenue. The vehicle was stopped and police spoke with the driver, Jacob Nadler, 18, of Kinnelon. There were also two juveniles in the vehicle, police said.
Police said they also saw a metal baseball bat with paint transfer on it in the back of the vehicle. It was determined that the occupants were allegedly responsible for the mailbox damage and that another juvenile was allegedly responsible who had been dropped off at their home. Police said they also found a glass pipe with marijuana inside during the investigation.
Nadler and one of the juveniles were charged with criminal mischief, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia while the other two juveniles were charged with criminal mischief. Nadler was released with a date to appear in court and the juveniles were released to their parents.

Correction: An earlier version of this story indicated marijuana was found inside the vehicle, when it was found during the investigation.

What great examples of parenting! Hopefully the judge and schools hold them accountable. I doubt the parents have made their upstanding citizens make amends.
When is the court date?

I don't think it has anything to do with parenting, just more bored kids in Kinnelon.

I think the company is a drug free workplace.Maybe the council can work on another ordinance that they can drug test the parents of teens caught with drugs.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong. But, we should be happy that the kids in this town are pretty good kids. Kids will be kids, and the best lessons learned are those from mistakes. I'm not sure if everyone keeps up with the neighboring towns, but there are a lot of kids out there doing a lot of worst things then the ones in town. I know, I wasn't perfect as a young adult, I'm sure many of us made mistakes. Just like we did things our parents would have never done. Times have changed and things are different now.

this town is filled with such nosy people always wanting to slam the next kid to get in trouble by a police force that is made up entirely of bafoons and idiots. No one who has commented on here probably knows the truth. How do you know the driver was charged with drug related charges although he might not of had them on his person or owned the paraphernalia.? Maybe one of the other juveniles owned the drugs and blamed it on Jacob.
Mr. G

and also think smarter, if Jacob was driving how could he smash mail boxes. Their were numerous other people in the car!

True. That would be. An impressive feat! But no way the driver was swinging the bat.

Now who would be driving near the mail boxes that get smashed if it was not the driver?
The driver is in control of the car and therefore he is just as responsible.

I get the idea that if he was driving he couldn't have been smashing the mailboxes, but on the other hand, if he wasn't driving the other kids wouldn't been able to smash the mailboxes and I'm sure if it was him or his friends that had something on them, they all do the same things. But, either way they are kids, and kids make mistakes and they still grow up and become productive adults. Isn't that what we all want for our children. It doesn't mean that it's bad parenting and it also doesn't mean people should go and post things about the dad's business. I'm sure there are some legal action that can be taken against that one.

does anyone use common sense? @Itsasaddayinkinnelon , have you ever realized cars have passener doors? how about someone driving up on theroad then the passenger hitting mail boxes from a passenger window or passenger side door?

Mr. G and Small town girl seemed to be the only accurate ones on here. Of course the driver couldnt have been swinging if he was driving, and must I add that i know well from first hand that Jacob does not use any drugs and therefore was not his paraphernalia in the car. Matter of fact there was no marijuana in the car. Due to the KPD they claimed there was over $500 dollars of damage done when in reality there was only a handful of $25 mailboxes that were damaged.

Do you think that the driver had no idea what was going on in the back of his own vehicle? He had no idea that there was a bat and the loud noises coming from the outside were his occupants slamming it into the mailboxes? If that is the case then maybe on top of all of this he should loose his license until he can control his vehicle properly. If it was my kid i would be selling his car right now!

Shame on you who bring this kids Dads buisness into the picture. For a matter of fact charges might be being dropped because of the failure to get the story straight. I know from first hand that there was no marijuana in the car but there was paraphernalia due to one of the passengers. For all the bored housewifes that know nothing about the law or about these stories I suggest you kindly shut your mouth.

To just assume that all the comments that you do not agree with, were made by bored housewives that know nothing about the law, is wrong. That would be like me assuming that because you know first hand that their was no marijuana in the car, just paraphernalia. That your one of the fathers of these kids and that they smoke marijuana.

And yes the percentage of people who bash kids on hear for underage drinking or drugs are moms. Just trying to get the point across that its disrespectful and moronic to leave hurtful and irrelevant comments when you know nothing about the situation. I have read a lot of comments on here and yes you know that they are being made by moms, and I'm sure a lot of them are well educated. But, I do believe that they only have young children or their child has not gotten caught yet. I got very lucky with my children, they didn't get into any trouble, or just didn't get caught, but I also was a very strict mom. People seem to forget that these children are our children forever, so when they make the mistakes and everyone wants to shame them and their parents, it's just wrong. I know I wasn't born an adult and I know that I have had many lessons in life, that I don't regret, they have made me who I am today.

Kids will be kids, but destroying property isn't just some kids doing something silly. And no one said anything bad about the business other than maybe he should get a job to keep him busy. Lol. I'm sure patch will remove that if people object, but eh.
Hopefully they learn something from this and make it right. Drugs, questionable decision making. Could be a great learning opportunity, or the start of trouble. What if one of the batters had leaned a little to far, or the driver had to swerve.
Definitely a good chance to explain some things to the kids for the parents...assuming they already haven't.

This is a small town, things happen and kids get in trouble and everyone knows everyone. But, to be honest I wouldnt want it any other way. People move to towns like this, so we can give our children the best that we can. People talk and things get forgotten and it's ok. Living in a small town makes us as parents expect more from our kids. I have caught myself saying to my children, that when you do something wrong I will find out, in this town things get around quick. Sometimes it takes a mistake to learn the lesson, just be happy that no one was hurt. I grew up in this town, and back then the kids used to put m80's in the mailboxes and some even smoked and drank underage and some of they grew up to be CEO's, business owners, FBI agents, police officers. Etc.. These things are all part of growing up and raising children.

If you search "mailbox" in the Triboro Patch, you will notice that this doesn't look like the first time these kids have done this. It seems like an interesting coinscedence that mail boxes were damaged in October, again in January, and a dark colored vehicle was seen leaving the scene.

I doubt this waste first thing they have ever done wrong. There was weed and paraphernalia in the vehicle...... But I doubt it was them. Although a self proclaimed relative of the oldest alleged criminal has been posting and has not once mentioned that what they did was wrong. More concerned about people making fun then the fact the cops caught his relative breaking the law.......

Kids smashing mailboxes is really nothing new, every town in every state has kids that do it. As adults we now It's not right. But, to judge these kids and make them out to be monsters is also wrong. There is a lot of things that are not right. Like people posting other peoples names in their post.

Yes, this happens everywhere but what happens when these young adults become bored with mailboxes and car mirrors? This group will probably stop now that they have been caught but should nothing be done too make them responsible for there actions? Maybe, there should be some community service and not just probation.

The scary thing about the comments is the lack of talk about making them take the punishment and reimburse the folks who were lucky enough to have these kids come driving their way. Kids are kids everywhere, and parents everywhere are too quick to defend their kids who could never do wrong.... Lol. Not just a kinnelon thing for sure. Small town you are right on overall especially now that you said they should take the punishment.

Give me a break. Mailbox baseball is a team sport. The driver has to drive close to the side of the road so the passenger can reach the mail box. It does not matter if it was $25.00 or $5.00 it is wrong and they need a consequence.
Captain Obvious

You said it..."a team sport." Look at the bright side. You have some young people working together to achieve a common goal. Granted, the goal had malicious intent, but is it really that bad? Better off they are involved in childish mischief than some of the lone-wolf crap and violent crimes you see really disturbed kids pull.
Everyone, please stop overreacting. It's not like they were hitting baby seals.

That means 60+% of the US adult population should be on heroin by now....and puppies should be an endangered species. But being that neither are true, I think these kids are going to be fine.
