'Intense Storm' Will Last 24 Hours, County OEM Says

Up to 16 inches of accumulated snow predicted in some areas of Morris County.

As the nor'easter makes its way to the region, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management is keeping a close watch over the pending storm and warning residents to prepare.

According to Jeffrey Paul, director of the Morris County OEM, snow will be scattered and light until Friday evening.

"We are gearing up for additional snow, sleet and ice accumulations which will become steadier and heavier towards Friday evening as the colder air moves in resulting in the bulk of the anticipated snow accumulations," he said. "Forecasts suggest that this will be a long duration and intense storm which will likely last over a 24-hour time frame."

The National Weather Service predicted between 10 and 16 inches of snow in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties. Major travel delays are expected Friday night and the snow, which could be heavy at times, is expected to mix with or turn to icy sleet.

"Very hazardous travel is expected for the evening commute and well into the night with visibility down to 1/4 mile at times," the NWS said on their website. "Isolated power outages are possible."

Temperatures could drop into the 20s by Friday night. By Saturday morning, the snow is expected to be merely flurries with a "sunny cold Saturday afternoon" forecast.

The Morris County Department of Human Services and Morris County Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans has been contacted and will be servicing county residents in need. Municipalities and residents are also encouraged to keep senior citizens and those who may need assistance in mind.

Among many preparation recommendations made by the county OEM, having a good shovel on hand, grocery shopping in advance, charging cell phones and filling up gas tanks are advised. Having a First Aid kit and an adequate supply of medications is also advised.

How will you be preparing for the storm? Let us know in the comments.

You said it, friend. I'm supposed to travel to Maryland Friday night for a funeral Saturday. Not looking forward to this trip.

If commercial flights are grounded, I am sure the Mayor would be happy to give you a lift on his private plane on his way to Aruba.

Sheesh, there's been barely 7 inches of snow in this area for the last 2 years. Move to freakin' Aruba permanently, why don't you, if actual seasons upset you so much. Damn, this is how life [used to] work: it was cold, then it was not. Plus, it'll be hotter and hotter every year for the rest of your lives: enjoy permanent Aruba.

If the power goes out again are you going to leave your wife here alone again for 14 days and whine every day on the internet again, Nedd? How about a little respect for our first responders this time?

ROFLMAO. It took a few months to figure that one out, didn't it.

Never had any issues with first responders…thus you didn't see me complain about their efforts.

My issue was and remains with the Mayor, who in the aftermath of the storm, abandoned the township for a sunny trip to Aruba while thousands of his constituents sat in their cold dark powerless homes.

I am not concerned about the power going out in my household as the risk of further incompetence by our Mayor has been mitigated by a Generac Guardian Series Generator.

How many residents "sat in their cold, powerless homes" while their husband sat in Hawaii on chat boards 24/7 for 14 days? Are you going to expect the town to tote in 5 gallon jerry cans and fill her generator and shop for her too? Fly home or fly her there, for crying out loud.

Clearly you know nothing about Generac Guardian Series Generators that run on natural gas and require no manual intervention.

You worry about your family, while I provide for mine.

So in too many Morris Co. towns, we can expect to drop our children off at school, drive to work miles away, and soon thereafter receive word that there will be an early dismissal--and many of us with no way to pick our children up. Fish or cut bait, school superintendents; either cancel school tonight or keep them until regular dismissal.

Your concern for YOUR children is overwhelming! Why don't you figure out TONIGHT who could possibly pick YOUR children up for you tomorrow. Better yet, stay home with them! Then you wouldn't have to drive the many miles back from work to care for YOUR children in the event of an early dismissal.

Mike - Parsippany has a scheduled half day tomorrow and the kids would be getting home closer to one. Not sure all comments are from Parsippany residents. Looks like J is from Madison.

Washington Township Schools are closed for the full day Friday according to the latest news I got. Now if we only get a light dusting of snow the bloggers will complain that the schools made a dumb decision. The weather forecasters are "hedging their bets" all over the place, other than predicting that NYC, Long Island and Boston will get clobbered.

Well, it probably wouldn't be as much of an issue if we hadn't already lost 2 weeks of school for Hurricane Sandy. At this rate, our kids will be in school until mid-July.

Tracy, I'm sure you remember when we were kids... they would put chains on the bus tires, and if it snowed, the busses would just plow through it. Now, if there's any chance of snow, they'll close the schools, even if not one flake has fallen at the time they make the decision.

That's because in today's society, if a bus got into an accident in inclement weather and children were hurt, parents would run to their lawyers and sue the heck out of the Board of Education.

In addition, we have people called meteorologists now. We actually know what the weather is going to be BEFORE it gets here. Amazing, right?

Bring it on! I love the snow. I love the cold. I love winter. My favorite time of year. You can take the beach and shove it! You can keep mowing lawns and yard work, sweat dripping off your hot sweaty body, skin cancer from too much sun exposure, suntan lotion that smells like fake coconut, and all the other disgust that goes with hazy, hot, and humid.

We are finally having a real winter. Awesome!

Winter and me: Perfect together.

It always makes me laugh that so many people talk about kids going to school in July! It won't happen folks! Teachers' contracts END June 30. It would cost so much in the way of overtime, electricity, not to mention conflicting with summer school and other programs - that it would never even be a comsideration. So rest easy; your child is NOT going to school in July - ever!

Right, Pat, they will just lose the remaining days of Spring Break. Our schools were closed 2 weeks for Sandy- we had to make up 3 days- so they scheduled delayed opening (instead of no school) on MLK & Presidents' Day, and lost 1 day from break already. Today we have early dismissal 1:15, so today will count as a school day. The dumb thing is, they are only getting out 1 1/2 hrs earlier, yet I have to rearrange everything to go pick up my kids at the same time at 2 different schools because they won't be getting a bus today.

Kevin, interesting comment about the mayor taking off for Aruba after Sandy....he told the utility companies to restore power to other sections of Lake Hiawatha BEFORE his own neighborhood.....hahahaha..the a-hole was away, in the tropics? Typical. Unfortunately his neighbors were not happy about that decision because a friend of mine went without power for 10 days....she lives across the street from the mayor. What an upstanding guy!!! That mayor of ours!!!!
