Kinnelon Junior Police Academy Teaches Kids Teamwork, Safety

Kids tour jail, learn how to unravel a hose and more.

Firefighters always work in pairs.

That is just one thing the 19 participants in this year's Kinnelon Junior Police Academy learned from the Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Co. on Thursday when several volunteer firefighters visited the kids at Kiel School.

The academy is hosted by the Kinnelon Police Department each summer and allows kids who are interested in criminal justice and public safety to explore the different elements of those jobs. This year, the kids were visited by the Passaic County Bomb Squad and took a tour of the Morris County jail and Morris County Police Academy.

On Thursday, the kids got to explore an Atlantic Health helicopter from Morristown Medical Center as well. The kids will "graduate" from the weeklong program Friday afternoon.

The program is run by three Kinnelon police officers, with assistance from four junior police instructors who are graduates from the program. This year, the Bloomingdale Police Department started a junior police academy for the first time.

Kinnelon Police Department has a group of excellent police officers ranging from rookies to those with several decades of experience. The idea of a junior police academy each summer is a really good one serving the community.

My sincere thanks to the Kinnelon Police Dept. for providing this great program for the kids. My son participated for the first time and had an absolutely amazing experience. He cannot wait to go back next year!
