Kinnelon Schools Being Considered for Energy Project

Business administrator said district is on the list to be considered for a Morris County energy project.

Three Kinnelon schools could be included in a Morris County energy project that would involve installing solar panels on the roofs and nearby facilities of Kinnelon High School, Pearl R. Miller School and Stonybrook School.

Kinnelon Public Schools Business Administrator Alice Robinson said Monday that the school district had applied last year to be included in the first phase of the energy project, but was unsuccessful.

Just prior to attending Monday's budget hearing, Robinson said she received an email that the district was placed on a list to be considered with several other districts to be included in the second phase.

While the first phase included mostly traditional solar panels on roofs, Robinson said she thinks the second phase could include more creative energy ideas, such as the usage of energy upgrades on parking lots.

This would be the first energy project the district would be participating in if included, Robinson said.

"It's just so exciting that a year from now, we could be talking about saving money from this," she said.

Robinson said the district will be meeting with the Morris County administrator to discuss the project more next week.

Not only a potential cost savings for the district but a wonderful way to reinforce environmental alternatives education for our children.
