A Bloomingdale man allegedly attempted to drive away from police before being stopped and charged with DWI Sunday. A male who was leaning into the passenger side window of the car also led police on a chase after fleeing the scene on foot.
Police said they were unable to find the male who ran, but the driver of the vehicle, John F. Neill III, 40, was issued a summons for failure to wear a seat belt in addition to the DWI charge.
According to police, Ptl. Nicholas Cifelli approached the 2003 Honda O’Neill was driving around 9:30 p.m., at which point the male began to run and O’Neill allegedly attempted to drive away without having his lights on.
Cifelli was able to stop O'Neill's vehicle and asked O’Neill who the male was. Ptl. Mark Ehrenburg responded to look for the male who ran.
Police said O’Neill was uncooperative and allegedly smelled of alcohol. He was transported to the Kinnelon police station and later released with a ticket to appear in court.
