Missing Dog Search Continues in Boonton
Dog scent detected near Walmart, though Jack Russell Terrier has still not been found.
The search for a missing Denville dog that was last seen over a week ago in Montville continues today with help from a pet detective from Nebraska. The location of Lando, a 9-year-old Irish Jack Russell Terrier, has been determined to be in Boonton, although the dog has not yet been found.
Lando escaped from the Wags 'n Whiskers Inn kennel, where he was being boarded, on Aug. 5, as confirmed by Wags 'n Whiskers Owner Tom Mazzacarro. Mazzaccarro said he and his family members have searched for the dog and hired Pet Detective Karin TarQwyn to help search for Lando.
"The area that the dog is in has been located," Mazzaccaro said Tuesday morning, while noting that the dog had not yet been seen by investigators.
Lando is beige with a black back and white fur around his nose and feet. He has a short tail. He is a shy dog and scares easily, TarQwyn said, so strangers should not approach him themselves. TarQwyn said her agency has classified the dog as a Shy Timid Aloof Reserved or Skiddish (STAR) dog.
"Dogs that are in that situation won't allow a stranger to approach," she said. "We need that phone call whereby we can get that pet owner in front of him."
TarQwyn has five investigator dogs with her searching in Boonton, she said. Cade, TarQwyn's main search dog, picked up Lando's scent near Walmart after recognizing it from Lando's dog bed and collar.
While Lando's owner, Cindy Kramer, and her friends and volunteers have searched for Lando since Aug. 5, Tuesday's search with TarQwyn and her investigator dogs began at about 9:30 a.m. in Montville. But the search quickly moved to Boonton after TarQwyn and the dogs began investigating a tip from a young boy who said he spotted a dog that looked like Lando by the water tower at about 1 p.m. Sunday.
"From where he left, from the point of escape, that's history," TarQwyn said. "We're trying to catch up on history."
TarqQwyn said she has done preliminary investigation work near the railroad tracks and in two parks and said she will continue to look for the dog along with the owners and volunteers. Mazzaccarro said now that the investigators have located the area the dog is in, they will continue to work to capture Lando.
"The hard part isn't finding the dog, it's capturing the dog," he said.
If you see a dog matching Lando's description, do not approach him, as he scares easily around strangers. Instead, call owner Cindy Kramer at 973-219-0182.

I'm sorry, but this is NOT an article worthy of the title of "breaking news", a kennel owner lost a dog, and they're trying to find it. It happens.

While I love my dog as much as the next person, I imagine the funds the family used to hire the pet detective from Nebraska probably would be a worthy donation to charity, maybe even an animal rescue association? I feel bad for the owners of the dog, but this is absolutely not worthy of breaking news at all--it reads like an article in "The Onion". Considering there is a professional on the case, I don't even see how this information can help those looking for the dog. Why doesn't the Patch open a section on missing animals where everybody who has lost a pet--not just those who can afford to hire a pet detective from across the country--can post and share information? That way, everybody who is looking for a missing pet can benefit without "Breaking News Updates" about a missing dog making a farce out of the other articles important articles recognizing the achievements of local Montvillians in the Patch.

lexih, the family did not pay for the pet detective. The business Wags 'n Whiskers paid for the detective. It was posted as a breaking news story because the dog's location area has been determined and the volunteers and detective still need help in actually spotting and capturing the dog.
While we don't have a dedicated section for missing pets, we would welcome information on any missing pets from the community. If you know of any, feel free to contact me at ariana.cohn-sheehan@patch.com, or anyone who is searching for a missing pet could also directly upload information and a photo of the animal to our "Announcements" section for free here: http://montville.patch.com/announcements/new

Look Ariana, you said it yourself, put the information on this missing pet into the "Announcements" section. It's not breaking news. When I see "Breaking News" in a subject line in an email, I immediately check it. Your subject line is a bit misleading. Over use of the subject line "Breaking News" can create a boy who cried wolf situation, and maybe readers may ignore an email in the future because of over use. Food for thought. And as I side note, I feel for this family, I'm not "anti-dog", I'm not heartless, I'm just practical and realistic.

So Nate you had to check your email- did this take up too much of your day?Time is everything when an animal is missing.I won't be heartless and list the reasons in case the family reads this. But anyone who has a heart can see why a missing pet needs to be found ASAP. So next time breaking news comes to your email you might not run so fast, WHO CARES! What are you going to do anyway- write on patch how you don't approve of it?Your spending more of your time complaining about this than the time it took you to read it!

I think everybody needs to calm themselves. Lorri, I know Nate well from high school and I suspect his annoyance at checking his email might have something to do with the fact he works with computers and therefore is on email a lot of the time. I'm working on a computer-based project this summer as well, and seeing the Patch Breaking News icon/receiving the email did prompt me to check as well, which was annoying. Statements such as "anyone who has a heart can see" are simply a bullying tactic in rhetoric, but I'm not going to sit here and discuss this further. Nate brings up a very valid point about what constitutes breaking news or not, and nobody should be calling him heartless simply because they disagree with his point.

Yes, Nate - I agree - more breaking news would certainly be what the latest housewiife of NJ is up to (insert sarcasm). Thank you for posting this, Patch! I have been keeping an eye out for Lando and I am glad for the update!

@lexih- so you mean to tell me that Nate was on his computer and on his email,he didn't have to even get up from his easy chair to check his email. All he had to do was hit the incoming mail button. This is sad that we even have to discuss this! What is this world coming to!

With all due respect, for an article that people find to be irrelevant, they still found time in a busy day to comment on it twice. Rather than complain about the importance of reporting on a local website about a local pet owner reaching out for local residents to help...just read the first few lines and move on if you don't like it.
Must everything be up for a debate or arguement all the time?
Best of luck with the search for Lando.

Thank you...The Patch...for alerting us all to a missing dog. Although some may not value the lives of a dog, those of us who own pets know they are part of our families. It's "breaking news" in that it alerts other reading to keep their eyes out for this missing pup. I travel past Walmart in Boonton every day to and from work. I will keep my eyes out and hope this pup finds his way home...

General "Patchers" at large, this is my last comment on the article. I'm a pet owner. I care for my pets deeply and would do anything in my power to help them. I was just trying to raise the point that a missing dog doesn't really meet the urgent nature that accompanies the phrase "Braking News", I just think that we need to be more careful with the words that we choose so the gravity of a situation is represented properly. Oh, and @Lorri s, I don't even own an easy chair (so Lorri, you're probably dating yourself with that reference).

I would be devastated if my dog who is also shy and skittish was missing for any amount of time. If I could get the patch to print a breaking news article in an effort to help find her, I'd be all over it.
With that said, I'm still on my couch in my pajamas reading from my smart phone and have the entire rest of my day left, probably still in my jammies. Good luck Cindy and family on the safe return of Lando. I hope to hear about his happy ending whether its in the breaking news, community or lost Doggie section. Find your way Lando! You can do it!

Hi Cindy, I also live in Montville and have been looking for your Baby and leaving his poster wherever I can. If he was spotted in Boonton perhaps he may be headed home to Denville. I drove around today in the Mountain Lakes / Denville area and I didn't see any posters of him in that area. Also, another good place to pass out the flyers might be to give it to the Postman...You never know...My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and most of all Lando.....I have faith that he will return to you safe and sound........ .
