Photos: Bloomingdale Fireworks Back With a Bang
After being cancelled last year, display returns to Walter T. Bergen School.
A large crowd filled the field at Walter T. Bergen School Friday night for the fireworks display. Many of those in attendence played on the rides, ate cotton candy or played games waiting for the display to begin.
The governing body voted last year to cancel the fireworks in an effort to save the borough money. But several Bloomingdale residents, including Brandon Bott, 14, and a group of local teenagers, approached the council members, urging them to re-consider.
During election season, Democrats Ray Yazdi and John D'Amato campaigned with a promise to bring back events that were canceled, like the fireworks, if elected.
The fireworks were brought back at a cost of approximately $5,000, or $2 for each borough home, Yazdi said.

Well, thank you to Mayor Dunleavy's leadership and whomever the Council members were who brought the community together for the best fireworks ever. It's important to have non-partisan events and to celebrate the country we all love. The crowd was huge, but well mannered and very appreciative. The cost is actually under $1. per home.

Thank you to the Mayor and Town Council. I'll say it again, it's my favorite night of the year. The Bloomingdale Fireworks is what defines small town America. I grew up in Brooklyn; the camraderie I enjoy at the fireworks reminds of 4th of July on my block when one guy bought all the fireworks and all the dads on the street took turns lighting them off. This is the one night when everyone in Bloomingdale comes out and spends time with eachother, The WTB field was full of kids of all ages playing ball and frisbees, families picnicking together, and seniors enjoying a night out with their friends. Sometimes money should not be the motivating factor.

And wow they were amazing! What a great display. And thanks to ladies like Sally it is also an opportunity for local nonprofits (like Drug Alliance and BBYC) to get their info out, sell some water and glow sticks and make a few bucks for other great community programs in the process. Talk about kids having fun together..kids from 15 to 5 dancing and singing together. My 7 year old is still glowing from one of them tellling her she's a great dancer.

Kinnelon schools could have had a turf field for $2.00 a household and the mayor and council were opposed. Now they spent a ton on lights and want to turf the municipal fields and can not. They are just short sighted.

I believe that the car wash by Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Company results in donations that support expenses incurred by the fire company in protecting the property and lives of Kinnelon. It is thanks to the Johnson's who own the Route 23 Car Wash.
