Police: Butler Man Stole His Grandma's Checks

Police said man allegedly took checks and cashed them without her approval.

Gerald D. Matthews Jr., 23, of Butler, was charged with six counts of forgery, six counts of stolen property and one count of theft Wednesday after he allegedly took his grandmother’s checks without permission and cashed them, totaling $540 stolen.

Unable to post $60,000 bail with no 10 percent option, Matthews was sent to the Morris County Correctional Facility awaiting an appearance in Morris County Superior Court.

Butler police said the grandmother had reported several thefts from her bank account had been cashed without her authorization. Police said they discovered Matthews had taken the money.

The arrest was made after a priority investigation conducted by Capt. Ciro Chimento, Det. Colleen Pascale and Sgt. Keith Soules.
