Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Hails From Morris

10-ton Norway Spruce to be cut down Tuesday morning in Mount Olive.

From Morris County to Rockefeller Center.

A 10-ton Norway Spruce will be cut down Tuesday morning in the Flanders section of Mount Olive and transported on a 115-foot-long trailer and transported to New York.

The tree, which is 80 feet tall and 50 feet in diameter, will be brought down on the property of Joseph Balku and will be erected in Rockefeller Center on Wednesday. The 80th annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will be held in two weeks on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

This is the first time since 2009 a New Jersey tree will be used at Rockefeller Center, according to NJ.com.

Makes me cry every year to kill yet another healthy, beautiful living organism in the name of capitalism and religion. I see it as not very different from shooting wild animals for sport and taking them to a taxidermist. I see no reason whatsoever why an absolutely perfect artificial tree couldn't be made for use and reuse in Rockefeller Center. We have birds living in most of our small evergreens, and they are only 25' tall. No doubt quite a few bird families will get displaced when their 80' luxury high-rise gets the axe tomorrow morning. :-(

Since 2008 the Rock Center trees have been donated to Habitat for Humanity to help build houses for the needy. Comaprint that to shooting animals for sport is like comparing apples and oranges. Please do your homework before blindly condemning the actions of others.

Jazzman, I wonder what effect your car has on greenhouse gasses? How about the furnace in your house that is keeping you nice and warm as we speak? BTW, rotting trees and decaying dead animals all produce greenhouse gasses. So I guess it is really better to cut the trees into lumber, and stuff the animals for display, than letting them rot and turn into greenhouse gasses!

It’s the ultimate goal of people like Jazzman to take us back to the Stone Age. If they had their way, we’d all be living in gilded caves—just like we have for the past two weeks.

@Edward, yes I can: Compassion for all sentient beings, unconditional love, acceptance of proven scientific findings, and stewardship of our planet, which is the only one we've got to live on.

Ponder for a moment how different the developed world would be without Christmas. Or, expanding on that a bit, how different the developed world would be if everyone bought only what they NEED, instead of also buying what they WANT. Ponder for a moment how many $BILLIONS of dollars of JUNK gets manufactured IN CHINA and shipped to the USA for our virtually infinite appetite for Christmas-related stuff. Next time you visit your favorite retail store, go visit their "Christmas" department or display. I challenge you to find ANY item for sale that was not made in China. Why are these items in our stores? Because people are buying them!!!!! Lots of exclamation points because this is something that makes me extraordinarily mad. We just had a national election, during which a major topic of campaign focus was the creation of jobs. Yet those same people who just last week were going to the polls probably thinking, at least in part, about which candidate will be able to create jobs in the USA, are now out shopping and buying all sorts of USELESS CRAP that was MADE IN CHINA with slave labor and dirty energy, because they just don't get it. Worse yet, most of it will break or stop working and get thrown away by next Christmas, so it will need to get replaced with more of the same.

Lucretia, well than Jazzman is in luck. There are literally hundreds of places on this plant where people still live as if they are in the Stone Age. Perhaps he’ll move and take his anti-capitalism and anti-religious friend, Jon with him too?

I think the bigger picture Jon, is way did almost the entire manufacturing base we used to have in America leave? Have you ever run a manufacturing facility in the United States? Do you have any idea how many laws you MUST follow, and how many reports you MUST generate? Are you aware most companies need to hire a staff of people, just to keep up with government regulations? Are you aware that regardless of the Bull-dinky Obama, throws, American manufactures in terms of percentage, pay more money to the federal, state and local governments, then any other country! My company is adding 500 Sq. Ft of office space, and I've already paid $2,300 in government required “permits” and I haven’t even broken ground. You throw Obanacare on top of it, and I’m seriously thinking about shutting the whole thing down, because at the end of the day Jon, people in this country INCLUDING YOU, buy based on price, and I’m just not going to be able to compete with the burden of Obamacare placed on top of all the crap I have to put up with already.

Outside of that I take serious offence to your swipe at every American, thinking we are stupid like lemmings and buy useless junk we don’t need for Christmas. I have no idea how Christmas was celebrated in your house, but I know in mine it is not celebrated as you describe. Christmas, Jon, is about the birth of Jesus, and loving your neighbors. It is not, and it never will be about cheap Chinese toys.

I have a huge Norway Spruce in my front yard, right along the curb and POWER lines. I would love to "donate" it for the Rockefeller tree. After the past two weeks, I'm sure my neighbors would approve, and I'm sure the cost of cutting it down is covered as even wanting to cut it down, I can't afford it.

Amen to that. It would have been quite appropriate for the folks at Rock center to take a "leaner" or a tree that had already fallen rather than one that survived Sandy. They truly missed the boat on that one.

Merry Christmas jazzman.

Why couldn't they have used one of the trees that came down during the storm? It would have also held a bit of special meaning to do that. Why kill a perfect tree that stood up to Sandy and won?

Because a tree that has fallen in the storm most likley is too damaged on one side. A "leaner" tree would be to dangerous to cut whole, and most likely also has some damage.
They look for the tree almost a year in advance, and the owner of the tree has the option of saying no, you can't have my tree. After the tree is taken down, it is cut into usable lumber and the rest mulched, used in NYC parks. It isn't wasted.
Roll up another one guys.

Centurion- Imagine if they put up a damaged tree as a symbol and sign of respect to those who lost so much in the storm. Wouldn't that be meaningful!

Barb, some people have no idea how to grasp an emotional concept. A tree that was damaged but still had a beauty about it. Sort of like that piece of the Towers that was left standing. To show we made it through.

wow some of you people are crazy! For one hunting for sport is awesome, my family eats for a whole year on what my family hunts. And cutting down a tree is tradition and it brings thousands if not millions of people together during the holidays, who cares?! really you think that cutting down trees is worse for the enviornment then most of the products you use on a daily basis (i.e. cell phone, laundry detergents, body wash, cars...the list goes on) So stupid and ignorant!

So you think that less people would come to see the tree if it wasn't "perfect" ? Maybe more people would come after hearing the amazing story that could be told about the tree and its symbolism.

Let's not turn this into yet (another) religious discussion.

Here’s a FACT:

No matter what we’ve been hit with, NYC and the surrounding area has never completely shut down. Not on 9-11, Irene, or Sandy! Nope, the only time you really see the greatest city in the world shut down is to celebrate the simple birth of a child, more than 2,000 years ago!

Some of us, Get it:

“My Jesus, my savior,
Lord, there is none like you.
All of my days, I want to praise,
The wonders of your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength.
Let every breath, all that I am,
Never cease to worship you.

Shout to the lord, all the earth let us sing.
Power and majesty, praise to the king.
Mountains bow down, and the seas will roar,
At the sound of your name.
I sing for joy at the work of your hands,
Forever I'll love you,
Forever I'll stand.
Nothing compares to the promise I have
In you.

My jesus, my savior.
Lord, there is none like you.
All of my days, I want to praise,
The wonders of your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength.
Let every breath, all that I am,
Never cease to worship you.” --- Credit to Hillsong.

Whose rear-end did you pull that FACT out of??? Neither NYC nor its surrounding areas completely shut down on December 25th, there are many businesses that remain open on Christmas (i've even worked in a few). Did you not know that Steven Speilberg often releases movies on December 25th so that non-chrisitians will have something to do on that day?

How can you take such a positive thing as a Christmas Tree in Rock Center and make something negative about it. We need things like this to build up our spirits after the Sandy mess. Why do things always have to be talked about so negatively? Merry Christmas to all of you!!!!! The tree always cheers my spirit and makes me feel like a kid again. I am a 72 year old grandma and I love Christmas Christmas. It always brings out the good in people. Thing positive and be happy about these things. Life is much too short. I learned this with the loss of my son nearly five year ago. You take each day and try to survive and make some good out of a bad thing.

Once upon a time in the land of plenty, a great scourge came upon the land, people were hungry , their fields went fallow, the factories closed, many were out of work. Times were desperate. A family with wealth decided to put their money to work and to provide some jobs they set about to build a great center of commerce. Those who labored there were thankful and in their thanks they erected a symbol of the season, When we remember a gift to all mankind and wish peace on earth and good will toward men. That is how the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree came to be, two years before the "First " Tree. The history of the great depression is not so much different than today, many are hungry, out of work, despairing. May that tree and its lights brighten someones season.

"On Dec. 24, 1931, some very fortunate men dressed the tree in strings of cranberries, garlands of paper, and even a few tin cans, then took places in line beside it. The men didn’t look fortunate, shuffling forward in their dust-caked work boots and grimy overalls, but as the line reached the clerk standing beside an upended wooden crate next to the tree, each man was handed proof of his luck: a paycheck.” " New York Times

Check the barrel once a month and top up the solution with water as necessary some of the solution will be absorbed by the wood of the barrel and be lost through evaporation. Rinse out the barrel well before using it again to hold wine. Thanks.

If you eat meat, trim the fat prior to cooking and eating. Removing skin from poultry will reduce saturated fats. When preparing foods, reduce or eliminate the amount of solid fat used in the cooking and preparation process. Butter, shortening, lard and margarine are best used in moderation. Thanks.
