As Hurricane Sandy potentially makes its way to New Jersey this week, Bloomingdale residents and business owners who took advantage of a service of volunteers Sunday morning will be able to block doorways with homemade sand bags.

"We gave out more than 600 bags," Bloomingdale Department of Public Works Supervisor Al Gallagher said.

Bloomingdale Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members and Boy Scouts from Bloomingdale Troop 86 filled the sand bags Sunday morning and helped load them into cars. Cars lined the driveway from the Bloomingdale DPW garage to Union Avenue, with residents waiting to get as many bags as the borough could spare.

Upen Shah, an employee of the Kwik-Mart on Main Street, which flooded last year after Tropical Storm Irene, said he was grateful that the borough offered the sand bags and that he picked a few up in the morning.

"Thanks to the Borough of Bloomingdale for doing that," he said.
