Kinnelon’s Interim Superintendent of Schools Diane DiGiuseppe confirmed at Thursday night’s meeting of the Kinnelon Board of Education that a teaching position in each the fourth and fifth grades has been eliminated since the budget was introduced in March.

There are no current plans to bring either of the positions back for the upcoming school year.

When asked about the impact of the move on class sizes within the district, particularly at the fifth-grade level, DiGiuseppe said the impact should be non-consequential.

“The impact of going from eight to seven (fifth-grade teachers) with current enrollment when we have 167 students enrolled, it means that there are 24 students per class,” DiGiuseppe said.

DiGiuseppe added, however, that not all of those students are expected to participate full-time in a regular fifth grade classroom.

“That’s not an actual number when you factor in students who are special education classified and pulled out for a full day, or resource replacement for math, language arts and science,” DiGiuseppe noted. “The number goes down to twenty-two per class, which is consistent with what we currently have.”
