My name is Cypress and I’m such a sweet girl that loves to cuddle and show affection to people. I’m FIV positive which means that although I have this diagnosis, I can still lead a long, happy life with a caring and responsible owner. FIV is a largely misunderstood disease and most people are under the impression that it can be transmitted to other cats through regular daily contact, but this is definitely not the case, as its almost always only transmitted through a deep bite wound, and only with other cats, not dogs or people!
Because of my FIV, I need to be either in a home with no other cats or a home with cats that also have FIV. If you’d like to learn more about FIV check out the links below, and with a proper diet and some preventative measures I can live a great life and give you lots of love!

Thankfully I’ve been given a second chance at the Wayne Township Animal Shelter and all the shelter staff think that I have so much potential as a great companion to someone and they always tell people how sweet I am, but most times people are just intimidated by my FIV diagnosis. I still hold out hope to find someone that is understanding and willing to give me unconditional love. My only option is to wait patiently, as I have for a very long time, and hope that someone sees beyond my FIV and realize that I would make a great pet. I’m very friendly, with a sweet and mellow personality and I’m playful too! I just need someone to realize that my FIV won’t prevent me from loving them, and hopefully I can find an owner with a big heart to give me a chance so that I can get out of this lonely shelter cage and into a loving home.
Please come to meet me and maybe you can be my long awaited forever home! When I see you come through the door, I promise if you just stop at my cage for awhile you’ll love me, but not as much as I’ll love you for rescuing me from my shelter cage and giving me a second chance at finding happiness and love. Just because I’m not perfect that doesn’t mean I can’t love you just as much as a kitty without FIV and if you give me a chance I will steal your heart for sure.

We have an FIV cat, and she gets along great with our other cats and does not fight at all with them. We have absolutely no fear of her FIV being passed to our other cats as she is spayed and not a fighter or biter. There is in reality zero chance of her spreading the FIV to our other cats. It is not passed to other cats by touching, rubbing or other casual contact or by eating from the same food bowls. Also FIV cannot be passed to dogs or people as it is a feline only condition. She is about 12-13, healthy and still going strong and requires no special care or medicine of any kind. Our vet thinks she is doing great. She is a real love too.

John, I can't thank you enough for sharing your great experiences with an FIV cat. This helps more than you know for people to actually hear a first hand account and understand the basic facts of FIV so that its not something that's feared by people. Cypress is such a very sweet cat, and such a waste that she waits for so long at the shelter just because of her diagnosis. She's perfectly healthy now and capable of giving just as much love to her owner as a cat without FIV, but she is overlooked all the time. You sound like such a caring and responsible cat owner, so if you know of any understanding friends, family, etc. that might have room in their heart and home for Cypress, please pass this link to Cypress's story along to them. Thanks!

I once had a cat who was also FIV positive. I had adopted him from an animal shelter in Wayne, but didn't know about it until I had him tested at my vets. He was gorgeous and sweet and lived a long healthy life! Some are carriers but dont get sick! we had other cats as well who were not FIV positive and none of them cotracted the virus. They were all indoor cats, thats a biggie, though. You cant let them outside, but other than that , no big deal.

Kim, thanks so much for confirming that FIV cats can live great long lives! Your personal experience just helps others to understand that this diagnosis isn't something to be intimidated by, its manageable and sometimes never even an issue for the life of the cat, as evidenced by your kitty! And you're right, people should definitely know that when it comes to FIV cats, they must always remain as indoor pets only. However, we recommend that all pets are kept indoors.

Cypress is a really nice cat! She's not at all aggressive and would love nothing better than a warm lap!

Cat, Thanks for your first hand experience with Cypress and telling people about her personality! Out of all of the cats at the shelter she really is one of the absolute sweetest! She always craves attention whenever someone is near her cage and meows at you to stop by to see her. So very people friendly and cat friendly! Hopefully all of these positive comments inspire someone with a big heart to give her a chance. A cat this sweet and friendly would make a perfect pet and its such a waste that she's stuck in a cage due to her diagnosis intimidating people to adopt her.
