This week's Athlete of the Week is the Kinnelon Colts' Sean Robbins for his great play against the Morris Catholic Crusaders. Robbins, the Colts quarterback, rushed for over 150 yards and scored 2 rushing touchdown. "Aside from our offensive line, who I believe should recieve credit for this win and our ability to run, it's great to have a QB like Sean Robbins who can end up with 100 plus rushing yards," said Coach Kevin White.
Kinnelon Colts boys lacrosse goalie Ryan Ullrich has been saving goals this whole season. This has been his first year on the varsity team and he has started the championship season with 16 saves. Led by some key seniors, the Butler Bulldogs baseball team made an unexpected run to the state championships last season. Coach White will rely on some veterans, including Brian Hallock, to help return to the playoffs. Patch caught up with Hallock last week to chat about baseball. Q: How long have you lived in Bloomingdale? A: I was born and raised in Bloomingdale, so 18 years. Q: How long have you played baseball? A: I started playing when I was five years old. Q: Who …
After winning a Morris County title with the Kinnelon boys lacrosse team in 2010, senior long-stick defender Orrin Main is set to lead a young Colts group to what they hope to be a successful 2011 campaign. While the Colts lost 15 seniors from last season, including 12 key contributors, Main is the only constant on the Colts backline this year and Head Coach Kevin Kelly is confident that the senior captain is more than capable of commanding the new-look Colts defense. A proven ability to lead and a hard-nosed defensive approach has earned Main a spot in this week's Athlete Spotlight. Q: How …
Ten- year-old twins Matthew and Melissa Konopinski, of Butler, are like many twins: exact opposites. Melissa is right-handed, Matthew is left-handed. Matthew loves watching sports, while Melissa only enjoys playing them. However, they do have one thing in common and that is the love of playing sports that involve hitting balls with bats. Both of them play in the Tri-Boro Little League and for the traveling teams for their age groups. We caught up with them last week to ask them some questions. Q: Who is older? A: Melissa: Matthew is older by two minutes. Q: How old were you when you first …
Butler High School senior Ryan Fontanazza closed his high school basketball career with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists in a game against Wallkill Valley on February 21. But it is pretty clear Fontanazza's talents won't stop there. Besides being one of the captains for the Bulldogs this past season, Fontanazza is also an honor student and is a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. He plans on taking his skills to either Penn State or Rutgers University this fall. Even though Butler's season is now over, Fontanazza is in full "March Madness" mode as he …
In hockey, arguably the most important position is the goaltender. Luckily for Kinnelon High School, they had a great one this year. Senior Jason Braimon played through an upper body injury all season, leading the Kinnelon Colts ice hockey team to the second round of the playoffs last week before losing to the Ramapo Raiders. Patch caught up with the man behind the mask for this week's Athlete Spotlight. Q: How long have you lived in Kinnelon? A: I have lived in Kinnelon for almost 14 years. Q: What made you start playing hockey? A: I played roller hockey as a child and always wondered what…
The name "Driscoll" has become synonymous among Kinnelon High School While it's the name of a current player, it's usually associated with an elder Driscoll, who helped the Colts win a state championship in 2008. Needless to say, the younger Driscoll has had big skates to fill. Luckily for the Colts, Ryan Driscoll can fit into most skates. The 6-foot defender has been an anchor for the Colts as a stalwart on the team's blue line. A member of the team for the past four years, Driscoll is both physical and technical, posessing good stick skills for a player his size. Driscoll, who plays year-…
It's been an amazing season for Butler wrestler Tyler Descafano, with the 119-pounder finishing in third place in the Morris County Tournament. But this was no surprise. The senior started off the season great, being one of only five wrestlers from Kinnelon-Butler Patch high schools to place in the Mount Olive Tournament in December. Descafano landed in the winner's circle and won his first medal after defeating Bloomfield's Mark Reyes 13-5. Descafano is in this week's Athlete Spotlight, and here is what he had to say about life off the mat: Q: How long have you lived in Bloomingdale (or …
To truly get a good feel of Butler's Michael McConville's all-around effectiveness on the court, you have to see him play in person. Although he is second on the team in steals, with 24, and second in assists, with 39, his presence goes beyond the stat sheet. McConville plays the game with a distinct desire and energy and is a defensive force for the Bulldogs. On Thursday night, against Whippany Park, McConville's many talents were reflected in the scorebook, as he had 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 points, 3 assists and 2 blocks. This performance defines the type of player he is, and as a Junior, …
While the Kinnelon High School wrestling team has been hard-pressed to find success this year, they are certainly not without talent. Leading this shorthanded squad has been Senior Luke Maroldi, who is having a great season, despite the team's inability to win. Maroldi, who most recently won his weight class at the first Kinnelon Colts Classic, is not your typical wrestler. In a sport defined by both physical and mental toughness, Maroldi is fearless in his matches, yet always remains calm and level-headed. Burying the jock stereotype, he is cerebral and creative and is studying to become a …
This winter season, Kinnelon High School's most successful team may be coming from an unlikely source. Kinnelon's girls swimming team opened its season 4-0 and now looks poised to make a splash at this year's state tournament. While the team has plenty of senior leadership, underclassmen are also a huge part of the effort. One such example is Abby Fisher, who has broken several school records already this season, where Kinnelon is among the state's elite teams. Although the season has already had some successes, Fisher remains focused on her team's goals. We asked Fisher a few questions about…
The 6-foot, 170-pound James Spadaccini came onto the scene last season, starting for the Butler boys basketball team as a sophomore. He proved to be an instrumental part of the team, averaging 10.2 points per game and an impressive two steals per game. Now a junior, Spadaccini leads the Bulldogs in scoring and has upped his average from last year, now pouring in 16 points a game. Through seven games so far this year, he has topped 20 points or more three times. He scored a career-high 24 points against Mountain Lakes in Butler's home-opener earlier this season. Last week, Spadaccini scored …
