With just under three minutes remaining, freshman guard Marlene Arabia sank a 3-pointer to give the Butler girls basketball team a 24-23 lead-which they would not relinquish. It was the freshman’s only basket of the game, which ended 28-25, as Butler improved to 4-6 on the season. Maja Sekulovska added 11 points for a Butler team that was held to just two points in the opening frame, but battled back to head into halftime tied. A combined 26-point performance from Billy White and Nick Ballistreri was overshadowed as Tyler Raff & Co. led the Whippany Park boys basketball team to a 62-48 win over Butler on Thursday in Whippany. Raff finished with 26 points and Andrew Holleran added 21 points as Whippany Park improved to 5-1 on the season. Butler trailed throughout the game, falling behind early and struggling to get back within striking distance. Trailing by 15 points heading into the fourth quarter, Butler was able to match Whippany point-for-point in the final frame, but came up short, falling to 3-4 this season. …
Tom Przetak drained four shots from beyond the arc for a team-high 15 points and Marc Przetak finished with 13 points to help the Montville boys basketball team cruise to its fifth consecutive win of the season with a 60-47 over Butler on Thursday in the final of the Butler Holiday Tournament in Butler. An injury to Butler’s leading scorer James Spadaccini in the first quarter helped Montville in the tourney finals, as Spadaccini was rendering him scoreless for the first time this season. The Butler boys soccer team will face No. 1 seeded Verona in the first round of the North 1, Group I state tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Bulldogs (1-14-2), who received the 14th seed for the tournament, will have its hands full with Verona (14-1). Verona’s lone loss came to Livingston in the semifinals of the Morris County Tournament. Kinnelon earned a No. 15 seed for the North 1, Group II tournament and will matchup against second seeded Glen Rock (17-4-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
