Adding to the last number on the date for the year is not the only big change this week. All municipalities will be making appointments for borough professionals and committees during their reorganization meetings, as well as swearing in new and returning councilmembers. These meetings are not just ordinary council meetings. Mayors will make planning board appointments and councilmembers will choose liaisons to committees. Tri-boro schools will begin a week-long celebration of respect Monday, with many hosting special assemblies and events centered on diversity. For example, Butler High School students will all be asked to dress their "Sunday best" Tuesday and practice manners. Teachers will vote on the student who has practiced the most politeness. Beginning at sundown on Wednesday, Jewish families throughout the tri-boro and world will begin to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. In observance of the holiday, those celebrating will eat apples with honey, to symbolize a sweet year to come, and listen to sounds of the Shofar.
