Kinnelon High School Science Bowl Team Competes in Regional Science Bowl in Princeton

On February 22nd the Kinnelon High School Science Bowl team competed for the first time in the Department of Energy New Jersey Regional Science Bowl at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey. The Science Bowl is limited to 32 teams from the state, and the winner advances to the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC.  The event is a double elimination contest with question and answer rounds in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, mathematics and general and earth sciences. In order to prepare for this rigorous event, the KHS team met weekly under the outstanding guidance of the team coach, Mr. Ronald Furia, a physics teacher at KHS. Team members had not taken high school classes in the fields of astronomy and earth science and had to learn these disciplines outside the classroom.  Not only was mastery of the numerous subject matters critical, but speed was of the essence competing against seasoned teams.
Team members were chosen for particular skill in the various subject areas, strong academic credentials, and an enthusiastic spirit to prepare for and compete in the Science Bowl.  Team members included: a junior Lara Balick, and seniors Kate Coppa, Claire Davin, Gabe Goldberg and Liz Smith.  The team faced Montgomery High School, a semi-finalist from last year, in the first round.  In the second round, the KHS team opposed Christian Brothers Academy, and lost in a very close match.  The KHS team made a very successful showing for its inaugural season participating in an event where there are few newcomers and many veteran teams.
