Butler Law and Safety Student Helps Raise Funds for Kids in Need

15-year-old participates in Three Days at the Fair to benefit Free the Children charity.

Parsippany teen Chris Worthington, a student of The Law & Public Safety Academy in Butler, participated in Three Days at the Fair over the weekend, raising funds for the Free the Children charity.

The annual fair was held Friday through Sunday at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta.

More than 70 participants took part in the event, which consisted of 24-, 48- and 72-hour races. Runners who had the most laps completed in their race by Sunday morning at 9 a.m. were named the winners. Participants could alternate running and walking laps.

Worthington, 15, has participated in track & field and cross country since the sixth grade. He participated in the 48-hour race and completed 115 laps from Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and Sunday morning.

Worthington, who will enroll at  in the fall, became involved with Free the Children when discussing the charity in social studies class. He decided to organize a race to raise money and got in touch with the Parsippany-based professional race organizers Jennifer and Rick McNulty, who own N.J. Trail Series.

The McNultys are avid runners and have been promoting professional race events for several years. Rick McNulty was Worthington’s track coach last year.

“I would like to continue being involved with the Three Days at the Fair event and hopefully do a different charity each year," said Worthington, who also participated in last year's event and said one day he hopes to pursue a profession in teaching and working with children.

The Free the Children organization uses funds to help provide education, clean drinking water, sanitation and the prevention of child labor in developing countries.

Three Days at the Fair attracted participants from around the country and even other parts of the world. For more result information, visit the N.J. Trail Series website.
