Kinnelon Library Flash Mob to Recognize Summer Readers

Reading program to close with coordinated dance put on by Township Library.

It may have been great to see a flash mob move in a fluid, choreographed motions during the T-Mobile Dance, or on the set of “The Big Bang Theory,” but now, one is coming right to our back door!

The Kinnelon Public Library will be putting a flash mob together on Aug. 1 to recognize the efforts of readers who have put in a myriad of hours this summer.

“The Flash Mob will take place Monday, Aug. 1…(the patrons do not know it yet BUT – it was take place at 1 p.m.)…(and) in front of the Kinnelon Library,” said Galina Adair, the Youth Services Director at the Kinnelon Public Library.

“Everyone is participating because it is the End of Summer Reading! The Flash Mob will all be taking part by creating a big Cartoon Feature,” she said. “Tim Martinec, a local artist/cartoonist, will be leading the entire event.”

As touched on, the event will be in recognition of the township library’s Summer Reading Program.

“This is it! We ran our Summer Reading 2013, and last Friday by 2 p.m., all who participated had to have their reading hours in to us. And what a summer it was!” said Adair.

“All told, we had hundreds of patrons participating in our Summer Reading Program this year. 401 children, 105 teens and 119 adults took part,” she said.

The program’s components include readers pitching-in their reading hours all summer to the town’s librarians.

Adults, teens and children picked up books involving world events, vampires, scientific breakthroughs, Fancy Nancy, Captain Underpants, teenage strife, Miley Cyrus, politics, romance and more, according to Adair.

“(The librarians) have to admit, despite our reading recommendations, we were often pleasantly surprised by what adults, teens and children gravitated toward,” said Adair. “(They) would like to congratulate ALL who took part in the 2013 Summer Reading!”

Winners were the readers who accumulated the most hours. The Children’s Department winners were Liam Hurt with 74 hours, Sailor Hurt with 54 hours, Gian Haasner, Katie McSpirit-Brush and Laura Wesdyk with 40 hours.

The teen department winners were Kristina Kalafsky with 92 hours, Lucas Vosatka with 85 hours and Alexandra Yoeckel with 76 hours.
