Mayor 'Will Not Tolerate Price Gouging' Gas Stations

Citizen warns against filling stations charging prices higher than those of their competitors.

As if area residents dealing with Superstorm Sandy didn't have enough to concern then, there is word of another threat: price gouging at the gas pump.

The phenomenon has already captured the attention of Mayor James Barberio, whose office issued a statement addressing it.

"Mayor Barberio will not tolerate any price gouging by gas stations, hotels or stores providing food to the public," said the statement. "If you encounter any company overcharging for these essentials, please call the mayor’s office immediately at 973-263-4297 or 973-263-4262 or e-mail us at partroymayorsoffice@parsippany.net."

Chuck Gubitosa of Pine Brook told Patch that he's been alarmed by what he has seen.

"The Sunoco on Route 46 west next to Wendy's in the shopping center with Home Depot and Staples was charging $4.37 a gallon for premium gas [Monday]," Gubitosa said. "All other stations in the area don't even break $4. Even the Exxon on the corner of Changebridge and Route 202 in Montville, whose Exxon gas is always the highest, was at $3.95.

"I think we're all suffering quite enough in the aftermath of Sandy. We certainly don't need people to take advantage when we're down," he said.

What are you seeing out there? Have you seen Parsippany filling stations taking advantage of the situation by charging higher prices than their competitors? Tell us in the comments.

They need to be held accountable. We should be able to deduct these expenses from our Utility Bills. That's the only way that you will see results. Fines just put more money into the government's hand to waste. We will never see that money again.

Please call JCP and L customer service # 1-800-662-3115 everyday! For Hazardous situations like down Power lines and multiple streetlight problems and power outages. Call customer service every day and let them know it is very important they fix this situation as it is a Safety issue now. It is best to call at 8AM as they are less busy at this time. I called today and they are hoping to have everybody up in Parsippany by SAT. They should be ashamed for keeping us in the dark for so long. They should not send us a bill for this whole month or offer us a deep discount. We are losing a lot of money on gas for the generator, going out to eat everyday, hotel stays. This is a natural disaster and I understand but they are the Power experts and they should have a plan in place to keep us all safe. This is a major inconvenience. We are high paying tax customers and we do not deserve to be treated like this. Our power should have been restored long time ago. I wonder what Mayor James Barberio could do to help us. HIS # is 973-263-4297 or 973-263-4262 or e-mail his office at partroymayorsoffice@parsippany.net. Call him too and ask him.

This area is a complete disgrace -- gas stations and hotels that take advantage of their neighbors in a time of crisis.

Also those fines (assuming they go through) for the hotels and gas gouging are not going to reimburse those directly impacted.
