'Nifty' New Bloomingdale Shop Offers Treasures New and Old

Business sells collectibles, houseware items purchased from storage lockers.

Despite what skeptics told her, it took less than 24 hours for The Nifty Attic Owner Gloria Silva to sell a mounted deer head from her new Bloomingdale store. Hours prior, Silva was told an item like that would never sell in Bloomingdale.

Silva and her husband, co-owner Domingo Silva, are proving that one man's trash is another man's treasure with the new store they opened up at 93 Main Street. The space is the former home of International Hair and located just next to the Bloomingdale Self-Serve Car Wash.

The Nifty Attic sells mostly houseware, gifts, furniture and clothing items. While Gloria Silva said she orders some stuff new, the majority of items sold in the store come from storage lockers the Silvas purchase, after they are unpaid by owners and auctioned off, similar to in the television show "Storage Wars." Silva said she sells the treasures, but buying the lockers is not always as glamorous as seen on the small screen.

"Downtown is missing a lot, that's kind of why I decided to open here," she said.

The Nifty Attic and the Silvas were welcomed to Bloomingdale by Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy and Council Members John D'Amato and Linda Shortman Monday afternoon during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store.
