Those with a sweet tooth have a new spot to satisfy their cravings in Bloomingdale after Candy Shack celebrated its grand opening Saturday.
The new store, which is located next to the Bloomingdale Recreation in the former space of a costume shop, is owned by Tracy Kaushal and her husband, Davinder Kaushal. The Kaushals have been married 18 years and have lived in the Borough of Bloomingdale for the past 13 years.
"I wanted to be around here. I wanted to do something for the kids where they can come and get something," Tracy Kaushal said.
The store offers a large variety of candies, both gourmet brands and name brands. International chocolates and gift sets are also available. But Davinder Kaushal said one of the main offerings of Candy Shack is the older brand candies that are no longer carried in mainstream stores.
"We concentrate on a lot of old fashioned candies you don't see a lot of around," Davinder Kaushal said.
This includes brands like Oh Henry! and Pearson's. Soon, the store will also offer a wide range of party supplies, including tablecloths, plates, favors and more. Helium balloons are sold at the store, as well as some stuffed animals.
Tracy Kaushal said she also wants to focus on offering seasonal novelties and candies.
"I'm a big holiday fanatic," she said.
The Kaushals even constructed a stage in the front window so that they could display holiday scenes to intrigue customers. Currently, a Haloween set-up is displayed.
Much of the interior of the store is the same as it had been, with the wood paneling walls painted over red and new carpeting. Tracy Kaushal said she and her husband spent about a month getting the store ready to be opened.
"We built a whole new cash register area," Tracy Kaushal said.
The store also currently offers some international pastries. Davinder Kaushal said pastries will continue to be offered at a lower price than in supermarkets.
