Going to the Gym Does Not Guarantee Results

Why I break consistency up into two parts is because I see people who go to the gym for hours, every single day of the week, yet they look exactly the same.

I started my career, like many trainers, in a commercial gym. While working there I was able to not only train my own clients but observe hundreds of other people’s workouts. I picked up on what leads to a noticeable bodily change and what doesn’t. And honestly, it’s not that hard to get great results and have dramatic physique changes. It boils down to two things, the first is consistency and the second is consistently doing the right things. Unless you have the consistent foundation, you will fail in whatever goal you are trying to achieve in the exercise world.

Why I break consistency up into two parts is because I see people who go to the gym for hours, every single day of the week, yet they look exactly the same. I’m talking about people who would be there three hours A DAY. Then, there are those who go for an hour a day, everyday who look exactly the same. These people have the consistency principal of showing up ingrained into their heads. But, they are doing the wrong things over and over.

Contrary to popular belief, the way to lose weight isn’t to constantly perform cardio.  It is to eat right and lift weights. However, additional cardio work is a great way to burn extra calories and expedite the process. There are endless possibilities when it comes to this type of exercise. I always recommend a higher intensity type cardio such as interval running, body weight circuits, kettebell circuits, dumbbell circuits, etc. and to perform this work for 10 minutes post lifting weights.  Additional cardiovascular work can be done on the days you are not weight lifting for a longer duration of time (30-50 minutes).

Consistently doing the right things means most importantly; lifting weights and eating right.  Cardio ranks number three after nutrition and weight training in terms of body transformation importance.

Also, it means being an active person in general, from walking to swimming, dancing to basketball it doesn’t matter what the activity is as long as you are moving around.  Exercise isn’t just something you do; it has to become a part of you for you to achieve the results you desire.  You can’t live the way you’re currently living and expect to lose 20 pounds in three weeks; it took you how many years to put it on? It’s about day in and day out doing something, even if its baby steps to promote a healthier way of life for you.
