UPDATE: 'Frank the Barber' Street Dedication to Be Held Oct. 8

A portion of Main Street to be re-named "Frank the Barber Boulevard."

Beloved Bloomingdale barber may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten, and his name will now stay fresh in the minds of motorists and pedestrians passing by on Main Street after a portion of the road is re-named after him on Oct. 8.

The event was originally scheduled for late August but was postponed because a few officials had prior enagements. Department of Public Works Superintendent Al Gallagher helped organize the event, which is being held at 10 a.m. at the corner of Main Street and Ryerson Avenue.

Halat was the victim of an apparent beating on the morning of April 1 in his Main Street shop, Frank's Barber Shop. He was 79 years old when he just days later at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Police continue to look for clues in the case and made up of money donated from residents and friends is still being offered to anyone who comes forward with information that leads to an arrest.

Signs that read "Frank the Barber Boulevard" were delivered to the garage earlier this month after Gallagher requested that the street be honorarily re-named.

The signs will be placed on Ryerson Avenue, Reeve Avenue, Van Dam Avenue, Union Avenue, Leary Avenue and Wallace Avenue. Gallagher said he is planning to give a seventh sign, along with a framed copy of the letter he wrote to the Passaic County Freeholders requesting the re-naming, to Halat's family.

Councilman Glenn Schiffman offered to pay for the signs out of his council salary during a council meeting in May.

The signs will be dedicated during a ceremony on the corner of Ryerson Avenue and Main Street. The Bloomingdale mayor and council are expected to be in attendance, as well as members of the , family members and friends, Gallagher said.
