Girl Scouts Prepare for Bird Habitat Unveiling

Troop 71146 conceived of bird habitat project at Walter T. Bergen Middle School and constructed bird houses and feeders themselves.

A Bloomingdale Girl Scout troop is preparing to unveil a bird habitat it created at Walter T. Bergen Middle School next Friday.

The scouts from Troop 71146 created the blue bird trail and habitat for their Bronze Award community service project.

The scouts installed native plants, bird feeders, a birdbath, nesting boxes, and educational signs. The scouts constructed many of the materials themselves.

“It was all their idea. All the girls were really into the project. They were all very enthusiastic about it,” said Meg Gray, troop leader. “Because they were the force behind it they took ownership of it.”

The girls put on a special talent show last month to help finance the cost of the project. The troop raised $800.

The project allowed the girls to mentor their younger counterparts.

“One of the really neat things we got to do was we got to meet with younger girls, the Daisies and Brownies, and help them make bird feeders,” Gray said.

Gray said Frank Verducci, principal of the middle school, has been very supportive of the initiative.

“He came to our meetings and told us to ‘go for it’,” Gray said.
