HalloWeekend Safety Tips From Butler Police

Costume, candy inspection can help create a safer Halloween experience, police say.

As kids celebrate the spooky spirit early this Halloween weekend, the Butler Police Department has offered some safety tips for kids and adults taking to the streets to trick-or-treat in the days before the holiday.

"The Butler Police Department would like to remind citizens to exercise caution this upcoming Halloween weekend," a press release sent by the department said Tuesday.

The following tips were included in the release:

  • Accompany children at all times
  • Purchase costumes made of flame-retardant materials and costumes that do not obstruct your child's vision
  • Inspect your child's candy before they consume it, throwing away any loosely-wrapped items
  • Use a flashlight and reflective clothing when trick-or-treating in the dark
  • Allow kids to carry cell phones to stay in constant communication, able to inform parents of their locations

"The Butler Police Department will be staffing extra patrols this upcoming Halloween weekend in order to assist any citizen who would like to report any type of suspicious activity taking place in their neighborhoods," the release said.
