Holiday Lights Glow at Butler Park

Hundreds gather near police station to watch the borough turn holiday lights on.

Despite the chilly, rainy weather, the Butler Park was packed Friday night with families waiting to see the fixtures and police station lit up for the holiday season.

The North Jersey Concert Band performed holiday tunes while Butler Mayor Robert Alviene led the crowd in a countdown just after 7 p.m. Santa also drove by the event on a Butler Fire Department fire truck.

The mayor of Butler back in 1948 had a really great idea by suggesting that the strings of bright colorful light bulbs be used to decorate the then big evergreen trees in the park, on the borough hall and firehouse. Prior to that they had been strung over Main Street like tens of thousands of communities in America. Now for the 65th season the park is still a place of pride for our community. The members of the Dean family are very proud that our grandfather and great-grandfather, Bill Dean, was in his first year of the ten years he served as mayor back in 1948.
