Kinnelon Man Runs NYC Marathon for People With Disabilities

Runner's disability inspires him to raise money for cause.

A blind Kinnelon man who ran amongst thousands in the New York City Marathon on Sunday finished the race in 5 hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds.

The marathon's website shows Joseph Bellantoni completed the first 5K portion of the marathon in 31 minutes and 43 seconds.

According to an article about Bellantoni on NorthJersey.com, the athlete lost his eyesight in a 2007 car accident. Bellantoni has run the New York City Marathon for the past three years and this year he ran to raise money for the Blind Ambition Coalition.

A welcome message on the Blind Ambition Coalition website, Bellantoni suffered a crushed face, severed tongue, broken ribs, punctured lung and went into respiratory arrest twice as a result of the accident. He wrote that he was placed in a medically induced coma after multiple surgeries and when he awoke, he was unable to see.

Bellantoni and his family launched the Blind Ambition Coalition to "help advance independence, productivity, and confidence of people like me with disabilities." Sunday's marathon was the first fundraiser of the non-profit organization.
