UPDATE: Earthquake Shakes Tri-boro

Kinnelon police confirm the Virginia earthquake was felt in the borough.

For several seconds just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, Kinnelon and Butler residents reported the ground shaking.

The Kinnelon Police Department confirmed that the quake was felt in the area through a Nixle alert at 2:31 p.m. The police department said aftershocks are expected and that residents can visit FEMA.gov for information on preparation for aftershocks.

dispatcher said the department had received calls about the shaking from residents. Kinnelon Police Lt. John Schwartz said no injuries were reported as a result of the earthquake.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Weather Service's website, "The U.S. Geological Survey reports a preliminary magnitude 5.8 earthquake was felt across much of the Mid-Atlantic region Tuesday afternoon at 151 PM EDT. The epicenter was located approximately 34 miles northwest of Richmond Virgina or 87 miles southwest of Washington DC."

The nearby Denville Police Department issued a Nixle alert at 2:15 p.m. stating that the earthquake was felt in Denville, but that no injuries were reported.

"There is a probability of some additional tremmors over the next few hours. Residents should evacuate any buildings if they feel additional tremmors," police said in the alert.

A dispatcher for the said he has  received several calls, although nothing was felt in the section of Bloomingdale by the police department, he said, at 101 Hamburg Turnpike.

On the Tri-boro Patch Facebook page, several users reported feeling the effects in the tri-boro.

"Felt it in Smoke Rise, at the top of the mountain," wrote Bonnie Nach.

"I felt it too, in Butler," wrote Paul DiLiberto.

Tri-boro Patch Reader Laura Stuart said she felt the shaking, but outside of the tri-boro.

"Felt it in Franklin, NJ," she said. "Whole building shook!"
