A look back at what made headlines and piqued readers' interest most this year.

Timothy Carney was found by law enforcement officials after seven years of being declared missing. While Carney was found safe and believed to be living in Chicago, his parents are unsure why he did not reach out to them for so long.

2. UPDATE: Woman Seriously Hurt in Route 23 Crash

Traffic was stopped for hours after police and fire officials arrived on the scene where a woman was seriously injured in a crash at the Morse Avenue intersection. The woman was transported to the hospital after a medevac helicopter landed at the Richard Butler School to pick her up.

We take a lot of photos of the tri-boro and the people who live here. But there are things we miss, and for that, we have our Neighborhood Gallery. We're happy that this year, readers were not only interested in looking at pictures that had been uploaded by us in the gallery, but uploaded a few of their own too.

4. Chief: Man Appears to Have Drowned Accidentally

A Bloomingdale man's body was found in Glenwild Lake after he had been missing for days. Police said he appeared to have drowned in the lake after going fishing.

5. Teen Extricated After Car Hit Tree on Kinnelon Road

A Kinnelon High School student was on her way to school when she lost control of her car and drove into a tree. Emergency responders spent hours on the scene of the crash and were able to cut her out of the car.

6. Former State Trooper Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Preston "Jay" Fairlamb Jr. died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash in Hardyston. His wife also sustained injuries in the crash. His wake was attended by hundreds of people and First Lady Michelle Obama even stopped by to offer the family her condolences.

7. Butler Woman Suffers 'Severe' Burns From Cigarette

A 64-year-old Butler woman burned her skin after accidentally catching her hair on fire while lighting a cigarette. She was airlifted to St. Barnabas Burn Center.

8. Bloomingdale Trooper Suspended After 'Death Race'

Trooper Joseph Ventrella of Bloomingdale was suspended without pay after the state Attorney General's Office accused him of being involved as an escort of a high-speed luxury car drive down the Garden State Parkway. He was a six-year member of the force.

9. Police: Escaped Prisoners Spotted in Butler

Butler police searched for hours for two escaped prisoners from a Hunterdon County correctional facility. A resident spotted the prisoners near Maple Lake Road and alerted police. Eventually, both were captured, although not in the tri-boro.

10. 

When borough officials learned of Jonathan Batista's death by small arms fire, they organized a homecoming for the soldier that included residents lining Kinnelon Road as the hearse carrying his body was brought to Our Lady of the Magnificat Church for a funeral. Batista's funeral was attended by law enforcement officials, military personnel and borough officials, as well as relatives and friends.
