Kinnelon Earns Environmental Certification from the State

Borough recognized by Sustainable Jersey for reducing its carbon footprint and promoting environmental awareness.

Kinnelon has earned a certification from Sustainable Jersey.

Sustainable Jersey is an initiative of the New Jersey League of Municipalities, the state Department of Environmental Protection, and a coalition of non-profit organizations and state agencies. The agency awards points based on actions they take to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainability.

Kinnelon earned a bronze certification, the lowest one available.

Carol Vreeland, leader of the borough’s Green Team, was recognized for the team’s work at the council meeting Nov. 21, NorthJersey.com reported.

The borough installed a new irrigation system and created an “efficient landscape design” at the municipal complex. The borough also updated its Open Space Program and, through tax ratables, which helped preserve more than 1,400 acres in the borough since 2005. A new recycling program allows residents to put all of their recyclable materials in one container for pick up. The materials are then sorted automatically at a new facility built by the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority.
