Ordinance Prevents Oak Tree from Being Cut Down

Tree in front of Bloomingdale Borough Hall will only be cut down 'is diseased or unsafe.'

The Bloomingdale Council ensured the oak tree in front of Borough Hall from being removed or cut down.

The council adopted an ordinance 6-0 Tuesday that amends the borough’s ordinance governing the treatment of shade trees. The newly-added section states that the tree can be removed only if an arborist determines that the tree “is diseased or unsafe.” The majority of the Council must also vote to remove the tree.

The tree may be removed in emergencies and if the tree is a threat to public safety.

Councilwoman Linda Shortman said she is in favor of having an arborist examine the tree on a regular basis to ensure it is kept free of diseases.

Officials estimate the tree is 150 years old.
