Time to Get Serious

If not now, when?

I Googled “time management” today: 134,000,000 results were returned (okay, at least I’m not the only one with a problem). One of them was a YouTube video of Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch presenting a lecture on time management which ran just over an hour. I’d love to hear what he has to say, but when am I going to find the time to watch it? I have so many balls in the air at the moment, juggling a full-time job, single motherhood, family obligations, school, friends and other interests that I previously thought I had all the time in the world for but have not pursued since I don’t know when. I even wanted to make blogging a weekly event but lately let other matters edge out my commitment to that goal.

I am truly blessed to have so much good in my life, but it always seems as though I’m attending to one thing while sacrificing others. The hour I choose to spend at the Yoga studio is an hour I could be with my daughter, or studying this week’s assignment, or visiting my grandmother in the nursing home. I’ve also noticed that when I find myself feeling overwhelmed, I tend to procrastinate, which just makes it worse. How does one maintain a reasonable balance of everything they’ve got going on in their life without sacrificing the quality of any aspect?

Interestingly enough, this is a huge reason for a lot of people to neglect their health and well being. I know people who are so busy that they can’t find the time to prepare their own meals, resorting to a diet of fast food and takeout. They feel lousy and don’t have the energy to exercise, never mind finding an extra 30 minutes to take a walk. When they get home from working all day there’s a million other things to do and by the end of the night, they’re passed out on the sofa in front of the tv. And not only is this lifestyle detrimental to our health, but the stress adds to our development of illness.

Part of what I’ll do once I’ve completed my training is to help others learn how to overcome their obstacles and make themselves (including their health) a priority … and I’ve got to start with myself! So I invite you to make the time and commitment along with me and if you’d like, we can hold each other accountable.

Are their positive changes that you’d like to make in your life and don’t know where to begin? Give me a shout and we can create a game plan together!
