Hundreds Attend 7th Annual Earth Day Fair

I hope you didn't miss the Earth Day Fair on Saturday! Visit www.kinnelonconserves.net soon and maybe you'll spot a photo of yourself!

The Kinnelon Conserves Committee hopes you were able to visit our 7th Annual Earth Day Fair on Saturday at Pearl R. Miller School in Kinnelon.

Dozens of exhibitors offered a variety of opportunities to learn safer & healthier ways to live by protecting the planet that sustains us. They included several solar energy companies with a variety of leasing plans; landscape designs that conserve water, use native plants and prevent soil erosion; and free test rides of electric and hybrid cars. Several non-profits, such as the NJ Highlands Coalition, were on hand to describe their community service programs.

Fair-goers learned how to go about cleaning their homes, buying personal care products, and making food choices that are safe instead of toxic. A variety of creative merchandise crafted from repurposed, recycled or restored materials, was available for purchase. These included beautiful woolen mittens, street shorts, blankets, embellished denim jackets and much more.

Local farmers - including Two Pond Farm, Macopin Farm and Joy B's Farm - inspired residents with their knowledge of "the land", chickens & weaving. The serious threat to plant pollination and our food supply was aptly displayed and explained by our Harvest Morn beekeeper from Kinnelon.

Besides the delicious refreshments (which included several organic choices), the children enjoyed several craft-making opportunities, face painting & potting free plants, while an improv acting group cruised the Fair, cleverly portraying dilemmas such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (of plastic discards) and unlabeled GMO food products. And for a free-will donation, Fair-goers were entered into a drawing for several prizes, including a rain barrel, farm basket of goods, battery-free flashlights and jars of dried herbs from Kinnelon gardens.

A wonderful day for all!
