Butler Man Remembered at Site of Hit-and-Run

Omar Monroig memorialized one year after his death during a vigil Saturday. Monroig was crossing a North Bergen street when he was struck.

The family and friends of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who died one year ago from injuries sustained after he was struck in a hit-and-run, gathered in a parking lot Saturday near where their loved one was hit by a driver who remains unfound.

Monroig was struck while crossing Tonelle Avenue in North Bergen. According to Jorge Monroig, Omar's brother and the organizer of Saturday's vigil, about 60 people gathered to honor his memory. Four North Bergen police officers were also available to assist with traffic.

"We wrote on 42 balloons messages and released them," Jorge Monroig said.
