Butler Man to Be Memorialized 1 Year After Death

Omar Monroig was struck by a car in North Bergen last March. Family members and friends will honor him with a vigil Saturday.

The relatives of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who died from injuries sustained after being struck while crossing a North Bergen street, will be memorializing the anniversary of his death with a vigil on Saturday.

The vigil will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m in the parking lot of 5117 Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen.

"Omar touched many hearts in his own special way. He lived his life with such enthusiasm," Omar Monroig's brother, Jorge, said. "Let us remember the life of a positive, energetic, loving and charismatic man. We strongly need your support to continue to raise awareness for this injustice."

Jorge Monroig and other relatives have been seeking information from the public since the initial hit-and-run incident on March 24, 2012. On that day, Omar Monroig was allegedly crossing Tonnelle Avenue when he was struck and thrown about 110 feet. Monroig was 42 when he died on April 2 at Hackensack University Medical Center.

While police were able to create a sketch of the driver, the man described to have been responsible has not yet been found. A reward fund has been set up for any information that leads to an arrest in the case.

Saturday's vigil will be led by a pastor and each attendee will be given a candle. North Bergen police will also be at the vigil to control traffic.
