Department waiting on final approval to be known for using best practices.

has been recommended for approval of accreditation by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. The department is now waiting on final approval from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies to become the 65th accredited department in the state, according to department officials.

The department met with accreditation officials Tuesday for a hearing about their accreditation process which Butler Police Chief Edward Card launched in December of 2008.

Butler Police Captain Ciro Chimento said Tuesday that accreditation “means that we’re utilizing best practices in policing.”

Chimento said having the accreditation, if the department receives the final approval, will help the borough have lower insurance premiums and would also help protect the department in the event of lawsuits. Chimento also said it would be an honor to be one of few departments statewide to be known for utilizing best practices.
