Burglarized Cars Reported in Kinnelon Neighborhood

Police said cash, bags, GPS units were stolen.

Several vehicles were apparently burglarized overnight Monday in the north side of Kinnelon, according to police.

By Monday afternoon, Kinnelon Police Lt. John Schwartz said seven car burglaries were reported in the area, although he said there may be more victims who were not yet aware that their items had gone missing. On Monday, Schwartz said police found a snowboard on a resident's lawn that did not belong to them.

"Whether it's related to the burglaries or not, we don't know," Schwartz said.

The burglaries were reported on Lincoln Road, McKinley Drive and Foothill Drive. Foothill Drive and the other two roads are separated by Kinnelon Road. Items taken included GPS units, bags, wallets, cash and loose change.

Schwartz said all of the cars were unlocked at the time and located within close proximity of each other. No home burglaries were reported.

The Kinnelon Police Department sent out a Nixle alert around 11:30 a.m. warning residents.

Schwartz said winter car burglaries are not necessarily unusual, but that they tend to happen in numbers.

"When we do get them, we do get a cluster of them," he said.

He cautioned residents, not only of the neighborhood where the apparent burglaries occurred, but all Kinnelon residents, to lock their car doors.

"Watch out for your neighbors, lock your doors. If you have motion sensor lights, put them on," Schwartz said.

Anyone with information on the car burglaries should contact police at 973-838-5400.
