Crime Rate Down in Kinnelon in 2011

Violent crime rate sees slight increase in state report.

The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed Kinnelon's overall crime rate to slightly decrease between 2010 and 2011.

The report, released last week, stated that reported larcenies dropped from 64 incidents in 2010 to 48 in 2011 and there was one less burglary (16 from 17) in 2011.

Violent crime cases, however, increased. In 2011, two robberies were included in the report while none were reported in 2010. There were also two motor vehicle thefts in the borough in 2011 while there were none in 2010.

Still, Kinnelon's Crime Index Total decreased in 2011 from 82 to 71.

The information collected by state police is based on a 2010 estimated population of 10,248 people and a borough area of 19.05 square miles. Kinnelon is classified as a "suburban" community by state police.

The report also shows a three percent rise in overall crime, mostly in nonviolent crime, throughout the state. Nonviolent crimes are classified as burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

Violent crimes, which are classified as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, stayed the same statewide, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.
