Hit-and-Run Victim's Family Still Hoping for Arrest

The family of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who was hit while crossing a North Bergen street last year and later died from his injuries, is still hoping to bring closure to the case and see an arrest made of the driver who struck their loved one and then drove away.

Monroig's brother, Jorge Monroig, told Tri-Boro Patch several months ago that police were still working on the case and gathering any information they could on the driver. However, police were beginning to exhaust their resources, Jorge Monroig said.

On Friday, North Bergen police conducted an informational checkpoint at the request of the family on Tonnelle Avenue, where Monroig was hit on March 23, 2012. Officers asked motorists if they recognized the man police have been able to sketch as the driver based on witness accounts, according to The Record.

Monroig was 42 when he died on April 2 at Hackensack University Medical Center. He was transported to the hospital the week prior after being struck.

He left behind a wife and son who still live in Butler. The Monroigs lived in Butler for about seven years after moving from West Orange. Monroig was a competitive bodybuilder.

As the anniversary of Monroig's death approaches, his family and friends have in exchange for information that leads to the driver's arrest.
