Kinnelon Police Chief to Retire Next Week

John Finkle joined the department in 2003 as a patrolman.

Kinnelon Police Chief John Finkle will retire from the department after 25 years of service.

Finkle joined the department in 1988 as a patrolman. He was promoted to chief in 2003. The move was announced at Thursday's council meeting.

Mayor Robert Collins spoke highly of Finkle and of his dedicated service to the borough.

“I think he reminds us what the public should be looking for in a police chief: someone who is proactive, community-minded, and caring,” Collins said. “I personally will miss the friendship and the counsel that the chief provided to me. He will be missed.”

Finkle’s last day is Oct. 31. Lt. John Schwartz will take over as chief Nov. 1. Interviews will be conducted for a new lieutenant and a patrolman.

“We have not made a decision about any one potential candidate at this point in time,” Collins said.

Schwartz and Finkle could not be reached for comment.
