Man Arrested on Marijuana Charges After Fleeing Scene on Foot

Police said man was found hiding behind Main Street businesses.

A 26-year-old Pompton Plains man was arrested and charged with possession off marijuana 50 grams or less Thursday after he allegedly fled from police on foot during a motor vehicle stop.

said they stopped the red Nissan Jeffrey Afflitto, 26, was driving at about 10:21 p.m. because he was allegedly not wearing his seatbelt. Upon further investigation, police said they smelled marijuana in the vehicle.

Police said that when searching the vehicle, they found a quantity of marijuana and an unlawfully possessed prescription medication. During the investigation, police said Afflitto allegedly fled the scene on foot.

Afflitto was found hiding behind several Main Street businesses, police said, and arrested and transported to the police station.

In addition to the marijuana charges, he was also charged with possession of controlled dangerous substances, resisting arrest, obstructing the administration of law, hindering apprehension, operating a motor vehicle in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, failure to wear a seatbelt and improper maintenance of a muffler exhaust system.

Afflitto posted bail ($15,000 with a 10 percent option). He was released to a family member and issued a ticket to appear in court in Morris County Superior Court.
