Man Found ‘Acting Strangely’ With Heroin at Diner

Police said the passenger of a vehicle involved in a collision Friday fled the scene by foot.

Two men were arrested on drug charges after police said a driver was involved in a motor vehicle collision Friday on Route 23 North, and the passenger of the vehicle, who fled the scene on foot, was found “acting strangely” with heroin at the No injuries were reported in the accident.

Christopher Caufield, 25 of Wantage, was charged with driving under the influence of controlled substances, reckless driving, operating with improper tires, failure to exhibit credentials, failure to wear a seatbelt and failure to have insurance. Alexander Ezzo, 22, of Andover, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes.

received a call about a motor vehicle accident in which Caufield allegedly struck the vehicle of a 74-year-old Stockholm woman with his 1997 Jeep Cherokee. Police said that witnesses told Ptl. George Beyloune that the passenger of the car, later determined to be Ezzo, had fled the scene on foot.

Police said Caufield stumbled and allegedly did not appear stable during the roadside investigation, and that he fell into what appeared to be a slumber-like state repeatedly. As police suspected him to be under the influence of drugs, Caufield was arrested and transported to the police station.

Later, police received information about a man who matched the description witnesses provided of the passenger, Ezzo, to be at Galaxy Diner acting strangely. Police said when they responded to the scene, Ezzo appeared to be in medical distress and under the influence of drugs. Police also said they found a small quantity of heroin on him and hypodermic syringes. Ezzo was transported to Chilton Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was released to hospital officials.
