North Bergen Police 'Aggressive' in Hit-and-Run Investigation

Charges could include vehicular homicide if a suspect is apprehended.

North Bergen police are continuing an "aggressive" investigation of a hit-and-run that ultimately led to the death of a 42-year-old man Sunday.

Omar Monroig was crossing Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen at 11:45 p.m. on March 24 when he was struck by a driver and thrown more than 100 feet, according to NJ.com. Monroig was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he died Sunday at about 4:30 p.m.

Lt. Robert Farley of the North Bergen Police Department is handling the investigation and said Tuesday that while he cannot discuss the case in detail, the death of Monroig has not affected the hard work of the officers conducting the investigation.

"It hasn't changed as far as we're being extremely aggressive as far as trying to apprehend the suspect," he said.

Farley said he could not comment on how many leads have been pursued.

Depending on the investigation, Farley said charges could now include vehicular homicide. He said the police department is trying to obtain information from as many witnesses as possible.

"We're trying to put out as much publicity as we can," he said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Farley at the North Bergen Police Department at 201-392-2135 or 201-392-2100 or email Farley at rfarley@northbergenpd.com.
