Property Crime, Burglaries Increase Slightly in Kinnelon

The Federal Bureau of Investigation releases crime statistics for 2010.

While the number of burglaries and property crimes in slightly increased in 2010, according to new information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), crime rates have remained fairly constant over the past two years.

According to data from the Uniform Crime Reports released this week, the number of property crimes increased from 57 in 2009 to 81 in 2010. Burglaries increased from 14 to 17 in 2010 and larceny or thefts increased from 43 in 2009 to 64 in 2010.

Lt. John Schwartz said there is a difference in what the FBI considers a "violent crime" and what the state considers a violent crime. He cautioned to not only consider the FBI numbers.

"They're one barometer, but not the total barometer of what your officers are doing," he said.

Schwartz said the FBI also sometimes does not consider burglaries of motor vehicles the same way home burglaries are recorded.
