Vernon Man Out on $20K Bail After Butler Arrest

Police said more than $5,000 cash, loose marijuana allegedly found in vehicle.

A 23-year-old Vernon man was released on $20,000 bail from the after he was arrested Saturday on several drug charges.

Robert Acevedo was charged with possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS)-marijuana, 50 grams or less, distribution of a CDS, operating a motor vehicle in possession of a CDS, improper maintenance of lamps, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to change address on a driver’s license.

Police said they stopped the silver Toyota Acevedo was driving on Route 23 North at about 12:38 a.m. for improperly illuminated rear lights. Police said that when approaching the vehicle, Ptl. Jarred Schmiedhauser allegedly smelled a strong odor of raw marijuana come from inside the car. He asked Acevedo to step out of the vehicle and during the investigation, police said they determined the vehicle to be unregistered and that there was an active warrant for his arrest from the Vernon Municipal Court for $164.

Police said they noticed a small quantity of loose marijuana on the floorboards of the vehicle and that during the investigation, they also found more marijuana hidden in the vehicle as well as $5,900 cash.

Acevedo was arrested and transported to the Butler police station. Bail was set with a 10 percent option, which he posted and was released.

Twenty-year-old Jon Hmelovsky, of Pompton Lakes, was arrested on Saturday on several drug charges after police said he was found to be in possession of suspected steroids and a small quantity of marijuana and drug paraphernalia while driving in the vicinity of Main Street.

Hmelovsky was charged with possession of a CDS-marijuana, 50 grams or less, possession of a CDS with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Ptl. Jarred Schmiedhauser stopped the red Mistsubishi he was driving around 11:21 p.m. for allegedly having a view obstruction and unlawfully tinted windows.

During an investigation, police said they discovered the suspected drugs and paraphernalia and police said a further investigation lead them to find a small quantity of marijuana hidden in his shoe.

Hmelovsky was allegedly also discovered to be in possession of $810. He was arrested and transported to the Butler police station where his bail was set at $10,000 with no 10 percent option. Police said he posted bail and was released with a date to appear in court.
